About The Contemporary Athlete
HERE AT THE CA WE WANT TO SAVE THE WORLD
WE REALIZE THAT'S VERY AMBITIOUS. WE'LL START WITH SAVING YOU.
In 2012, I started to look around at the local landscape of gyms and facilities and realized there wasn’t any place in the area where I wanted to work out, or more importantly, train. I was in search of a place progressively geared and driven by a team dynamic. An environment that embraced the grit of true hard work, that didn’t promise shortcuts, and was not coerced by the latest trend or fad.
From here, the CA was born; first as an idea and then a facility. Ultimately, the CA is a philosophy. Nobody here is special. The work is the work. It’s not glamorous, trendy, or worthy of a YouTube video. It is what it is. It is simple, effective movement, and clear, concise programming. It is driven by an individual’s needs and condensed into a coachable, cost effective format. It is performance driven, yet accessible to the general public. For those willing to do the work, their goals are their limits.
We do some things here that we believe are the foundation of all performance development.
- We do a shit ton of push-ups. I like them, so we do them. Nobody has ever died from having a bigger chest or back.
- We love to deadlift. A lot. Apparently, deadlifting is “dangerous”. It can be if you don't know how to setup correctly but once you have that, you unlock a whole other gear of awesomeness you didn't even know you had.
- Crawling: You came into this world on your back, you learned how to roll over, and we prefer that you not go out on your knees. Consider this a daily affirmation of your awesomeness as a bipedal creature. Also, it's great for shoulder mobility and strength; you can quite literally crawl your way back to shoulder health.
- Complex barbell movements are for those that are ready for them. Or better yet need them. We view the barbell as your graduate degree in strength training. When you are ready for it, we will do it. It is very likely that you won’t ever be ready for it or need it. So we reserve it for those that need/want it.
